Dumfries Museum

Museo | Dumfries | Scotland | Reino Unido

A lovely afternoon out. We were told to come here by a local and it did not disappoint. We were unsure wether to go as we have a baby and a 2 year old who finds it hard to not touch, which makes me incredibly anxious, but staff were very polite. There was a Lego hunt on, so we were able to actually take in the museum whilst our 2 year old was very excited about finding the Lego figures. I would totally recommend visiting here, it's perfect for an afternoon out. Thank you for you hospitality

A wonderful museum! You could tour this museum 3/4 times and still find something new and interesting. And the camera obscura is a must see. Absolutely fascinating. The staff were very friendly, welcoming, well presented and professional.

This small museum is a real gem. Free entry and a wide range of exhibits from all periods of local history from the Neolithic to recent times, plus dinosaur footsteps! There is also a camera obscura here, but it's only open on sunny days and we visited in the rain. Still worthwhile though. There are several exhibits that can be touched and quite a lot of child oriented activities. The video about the history of the museum was made by local children too.

Enjoy !

Interesting little place with lots of different collections of artifacts. I would recommend going up to see the camera obscura, it is really interesting and amazing just how clearly you can see an image of the surrounding area using it. It is free to get into the museum, and only a small charge if you want to see the camera obscura. Note that you can only see the camera on days it isn't raining.

Incredible little museum showcasing the history and archaeology of Dumfries and the surrounding area. The highlight was most definitely the Roman altar reconstruction showing how vividly it was painted when it was first created. Other highlights include the large telescope and the Medieval stone carvings in the basement of the tower. The most interesting aspect is the connection with the Apollo moon landings in the 1960s. We didn't visit the camera obscura as there was an additional charge. The museum is free to enter although donations are most certainly welcome. The staff were also really friendly and welcoming.

Outstanding example of a local history museum. Fascinating, well curated, varied exhibits. Engaging, thoughtful activities for kids. Friendly and welcoming staff. So wonderful to have free entry making this a truly egalitarian experience and lovely to see locals and tourists alike accessing it. We were extra lucky that the weather allowed for a demonstration of the Camera Obscura, for which there is a small charge. Free parking on site. Toilets inside. Gift shop.

A really extensive museum with plenty of interesting and well kept artefacts to look at. There a a large range of interactive exhibits for children which is a great touch. Entry is free and we gave a donation as the museum was so interesting. Well worth a visit, if you’re in Dumfries.
